Career Choice Day
On Thursday 5th August 2010, 21 ABCN companies opened their doors to more than 1300 Year 10 and 11 students from across Australia for the inaugural Career Choice Day. Schools in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra and Brisbane participated in Career Choice Day, a program that gives students a glimpse into the real world of work and careers in some of Australia's leading companies.
Now in it's fifth successful year, this one day experience targets students in Year 10 and 11 as they are considering their subject, study and career options for the future. It is specifically designed to broaden student’s awareness of the career choices available to them and to expose the diversity of career journeys of successful people. What is involved
Students from ABCN schools visit companies accompanied by one or more teacher/s. Each company will host one or two groups of students on the day providing them with lunch. The students will spend three hours at the company, learning about different working environments and the types of people and roles that they employ. Students will then have the opportunity to debrief and discuss the visit and what they learnt with their teachers in a facilitated session.
The need
Career Choice Day was developed in response to requests from principals for opportunities for students to visit workplaces and experience the working world. Opportunities for many students to experience a range of workplaces before making career decisions are often limited and Career Choice Day seeks to expose students to a range of companies and the breadth of careers within those companies.
