Information for Parents and Carers
If your child has been selected to take part in an ABCN program, they’ll join a structured mentoring experience designed to build confidence and help them learn more about careers and the world of work.
ABCN programs bring students together in groups with volunteer mentors from our member companies, who share their own experiences and practical insights. Programs are fully facilitated by ABCN and delivered in partnership with your child’s school.

What is ABCN?
ABCN is a not-for-profit organisation that works with schools and businesses across Australia. Our mentoring programs give students opportunities to learn directly from people working across a wide range of industries.
What happens during an ABCN program?
In small groups, students take part in facilitated activities and conversations with volunteer mentors. The content varies by program and may focus on careers, leadership, interview preparation, financial capability or other skills relevant to life beyond school.
Who runs the program?
Each program is led by an ABCN facilitator, who guides the activities and supports students and mentors throughout the session. A teacher is also present. All mentors and facilitators have a valid Working with Children check.
Is there a cost to participate?
ABCN do not charge schools for participating in our programs and all materials and lunch are provided. Your school will provide information about any practical arrangements associated with attending.
What will my child learn?
Each ABCN program has a different focus, but all programs are designed to help students build confidence and better understand the world of work. Your child may learn about different careers, workplace expectations, communication skills or pathways after school, depending on the program they attend.
Students also have the chance to ask questions, hear from mentors and think about their own strengths in a supportive setting.
Who are the mentors?
Mentors are employees of ABCN member companies who volunteer through their workplace. They share their work and life experience with students and are briefed by ABCN before participating.
What checks are carried out on mentors?
ABCN requires all mentors to meet the relevant Working with Children Check requirements for their state or territory and verifies these checks before participation.
Where will the program take place?
This depends on the program. Face-to-face programs take place at an ABCN member company workplace, while some programs can be delivered digitally. Your school will provide the specific location and arrangements.
What if I have questions about my child’s participation?
Your child’s school should be your first point of contact for program-specific information, including timing, travel arrangements and consent requirements.
